I am Pakistani by nationality, but I have barely spent any significant time of my life in the country. Earlier this year, I felt a sudden urge to put aside all my other travel plans and explore my lesser-visited homeland, which is striving hard to carve a place on the global tourism map.

Hunza Valley

The Hunza Valley is located in the autonomous region of Gilgit-Baltistan, bordering China. Nestled among the towering Karakoram peaks, it is celebrated for its stunning landscapes and adventure activities. The cherry blossom season in Hunza Valley spans from late March to mid-April, transforming the region into a vibrant palette of pink and white hues.

I began my journey with a small group of seven strangers, departing from Islamabad at midnight towards Chilas, a town in Gilgit-Baltistan that served as our first overnight stop. The journey along the Karakoram Highway — often bumpy but incredibly scenic — took 19 hours to reach Chilas.

The next morning, we resumed our adventure with a five-hour drive toward Hunza Valley. This stretch of road was far smoother, and as we drew closer to Hunza, the landscape underwent a magical transformation. The barren brown mountains gave way to snowcapped peaks, glaciers, and an endless expanse of cherry blossom trees, their pink and white blooms creating an enchanting spectacle. It was a sight straight out of a dream!

Lunch at Mt. Rakaposhi

Our lunch stop was at the foothills of Mt. Rakaposhi, home to the Ghulmit Glacier, which boasts the highest unbroken slope on Earth. The area was surrounded by blossoming cherry trees, providing an idyllic setting for tourists, both local and international. Unlike other popular cherry blossom destinations in the world, Hunza was delightfully uncrowded, allowing me to enjoy the serene beauty without queues or chaos. This is undoubtedly one of the perks of visiting Pakistan during the cherry blossom season.

Cherry Blossoms in Hunza Valley

Everywhere I went in Hunza Valley, the stunning cherry blossom trees added an extra layer of beauty to the already mesmerizing landscape. Some of the best spots for capturing cherry blossoms in Hunza include the Mt. Rakaposhi foothill, Altit Fort, Karimabad, Gulmit, and the historic settlement of Ganesh.

As someone who has spent most of their life in metropolitan cities, the sight of locals tending to their cherry trees and living in harmony with nature was a humbling experience. Cherry cultivation is a major part of the region’s economy and a key ingredient in Hunza’s local cuisine. During my visit, I enjoyed some of the best cherry-based drinks and even brought home a stash of dried cherries as gifts for my family.

For tourists like me, cherry blossom trees may seem like a seasonal attraction or the perfect backdrop for Instagram-worthy photos. But during my time in Hunza, I realized that these trees are much more than just scenic beauty — they are a vital source of food and trade for the locals. The care and pride with which the people of Hunza nurture their cherry orchards reflect their deep connection with their land.

Thanks to Hunza Adventure Tours, this journey not only introduced me to the beauty of cherry blossoms in Pakistan but also deepened my appreciation for the culture, resilience, and natural treasures of my homeland. Exploring Hunza during cherry blossom season has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life, and I now understand why it deserves a spot on every travel enthusiast’s bucket list.
